This is the fifth state of the slipcased sets of The Lord of the Rings that were available from 1960 to 1961, with less then 1000 produced.

The Fellowship of the Ring is a 10th impression published in 1961.
The Two Towers is a 7th impression published in 1960.
The Return of the King is a 7th impression published in 1961.
An nice set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature.

The set is housed in the original publishers off white slipcase with the label on one side.
The slipcase shows rubbing to the edges, bumps and loss to the corners, soiled to top and bottom from the staples.

Previous owners name to all three volumes, but no other marks or writing to the books.

Overall this set is in good condition.
There is some foxing and offsetting in all three books.
The text block is clean and bright, edges are also clean & bright.
The red topstain is clean, without any fading.
The exterior cloth is extremely clean, with the gilt untarnished and bright.
The books look unread, are still clean and tight, and the maps are attached, and in excellent condition, no extra folds or tears noted.
Some stains to the front of the text block of the two towers.

The dustjackets are in good shape with some chips to the top and bottom of the spines and spines darkened from exposure to light.
None are price clipped and are the original and correct impression for all three books.
The Fellowship of the Ring dust jacket has some soliing to the front and wear to the edges and a small tear at the edge where it wraps around the board.
Because of the tanning the red and black has faded on the spines.

In The Fellowship of the Ring, the map showing A Part of The Shire appears opposite page 24.
In The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, the 1954 version of the map of The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age is inserted on a fold-out sheet at the rear.
In The Return of the King, the Map of Gondor, Rohan and Mordor is inserted on a fold-out sheet at the rear.

This is the rare fifth state of the slipcase, that was available from 1960 to 1961.
The number of sets produced is uncertain, but was probably less than 1,000.

The slipcase was manufactured by Jarrold & Sons and covered with grey textured paper.
No price printed on label.
One piece construction.
Staples in top and bottom panels.
Join running down centre of top and bottom panels.

A fabulous rare set for the collector, difficult to find in this lovely condition.
